I have sometimes thought about not continuing my medical insurance: the amount I have spent on premiums over the years would be enough to pay the bills if I had saved it. But the lingering fear is that, who knows, there may be a bill I cannot pay from my savings. And this is what insurers exploit. The lack of transparency and of any principles in this system is what bothers me most.
Your writing is awesome. That's very troubling about heath insurance. They don't have anything like Medicare in India set up by the government? Medicare is government program. But the health insurance is regular private insurance. Medicare pays companies to provide Medicare counselors to help seniors find the health insurance for the least cost that provides the benefits you need most. Mine is called United Healthcare Advisors. They suggest a primary company that pays 80% then I also have to get a supplemental that pays the 20%. Surprised they don't have supplemental in India. I typed into Google this question:

Thanks Elena. Indeed, it is a complex system made only to take advantage of our fears (of disease, treatment costs etc.) to sell us insurance schemes, and then exploit any loophole to deny the benefits.
Oh Kanti what an ordeal and a worry. I'm in the middle of a small insurance claim and I am beginning to suspect I am just one of thousands who are being taken for a ride. Well done for persisting!
